Photo of the week
In this week’s photo of the week, I have found a photo from China that I absolutely love. I will be talking about the specific details regarding the photo, as to why I believe it works, but also my personal connection to the photo.
This is one of my all time favorite photos. And at the time when I actually managed to capture it, it was probably my favorite. Fenghuang is a truly magical city, located a short drive from the famous avatar mountains. The houses are so unique, build in a very old traditional style, which makes for beautiful settings. Though the city has become quite touristy if you are out and about in the early morning, it is absolutely magical. I wandered around the streets, almost entirely by myself and it was a beautiful experience.
Back to the photo. Why does it work so well?
First off, the colors compliment each other really well. The main colors in the photo are blue and red/orange, which are complimentary colors.
The subject is placed in a central composition, in open space, resulting in the fact that he is what catches the eye of the viewer. Given that he is in a pocket of open space, there is nothing that interrupts the vision.
From the left side of the photo there is made use of two leading lines. In both cases the trees (reflection of the trees as well) leads the eye of the viewer towards the center of the image. On the right hand side it is the same case, where the eye of the viewer is also lead towards the center.
Due to the reflection of the water the photo uses a lot of symmetry, giving a pleasing look. The symmetry is only interrupted by the thick fog which also helps add interest to the photo.
From a personal stand point I really like the photo due to what it represents to me. Looking back, I think that this was the first really good photo I took on my photography journey. Starting out, it’s always difficult to compare your work to others, but as you grow, you start to see things differently. This photo really helped me out in that case. At the time, I probably didn’t even think about getting the components right, however due to my intensive study of composition and colors, I think it was ultimately in the back of my head.
Besides, the photo represents serenity, peace and calmness.
Wandering around as the sun is about to rise, coffee in one hand, a camera in the other. That is one of the best ways to start the morning in my opinion.
