Photo of the week

A new weekly feature on the site. I’m going to post a photo I have been working on lately, and talk about the experience, and what it is I like about the photo, both from a technical and a personal view.

Photo of the week

In its own sense, this is not a new photo. But somehow I keep going back to look at this one, and it just has to be the first weekly feature. There are so many things I like about this photo and it’s probably one of my favorites ever.
So what works so well in this one? For one, it’s different. It is different to the thousands of other photos you see online of the Taj Mahal. And that in itself makes it special to me.

From a technical standpoint we have two sets of leading lines. The crowd of people and the trees lined up on the right side. Both lead directly to our focal point, which is placed in the middle of the frame.

If we look at color theory, in this case I have made use of what is called Triadic colors. Basically what that means is, that I have used three different colors, placed at exactly the same distance to each other on the coloring wheel. Using triadic colors, you can use both primary and secondary colors.
I made use of blue, yellow and red, creating a photo filled with contrast and vibrancy. The vibrancy of the various colors gives the photo extra vitality which gives it a more clean look.

The fog in the distance, around the Taj Mahal helps add some mystery to the photo which makes the view think.
The people in the photo appear almost at the bottom of the right side of the frame, which helps drag the viewer into the scene. Therefor I have also made use of some empty space at the bottom left side of the frame, in order to make the people lead the viewer into the scene.

From a personal point of view, experiencing Taj Mahal up close, was just an incredible experience. There is so much mystery surrounding this incredible place. It is a place that, I guess, most photographers want to visit at least once in their life. I have been lucky enough to visit twice, and am already planning my next visit!
